I experienced a curruption error on my macbook pro 13" hard drive completely out of the blue and lost 1.5 years worth of music that I had naively not backed up. They were 'Logic.' files and I had also lost 100's of audio files and sample files that link with the projects themselves. I was devastated!

I sent my hard drive to Kroll and spoke to a very friendly chap called Tom who talked me through the process, I then payed for a file report. (I was sceptical as to how they would completely recover my data, it seemed quite complicated there being so many different audio files etc for their systems to recovers and place into the correct places, I thought that even if I did get my data back, it would all be scattered and I'd have to maticluously put it back together again)

Once I got the file report back and I read through the report (Which was 100% data recovery) I then phoned Tom and he clicked through certain folders and told me what was there and how it would all work once I received it. By this point I was extremely confident that at the very least I would get my music back, even if it was all over the place. So I payed for the standard service and Tom sent the finished hard drive out to me the next day.

When I received the hard drive, I plugged it into my computer and experienced a rush of complete happiness! IT WORKED! IT WORKED PERFECTLY! All my files where EXACTLY as they were, I simply opened them up and they where just how I left them seconds before my hard drive stopped working! It had even transferred over little intricacies, for example, I colour coded the audio files and they were still like it, everything was exactly how it should of been, I was over the moon with this service!

Yes, it is expensive, but think about what is truly important to you! what you earn, or what you create with your time on earth. I ended up spending an upward of £1000 that I couldn't really afford, but the music I make is infinitly more important to me than what money I have.

So to conclude, if you have had some kind of curruption error and you want to get your music files or video editing files back, I hope this review puts your mind at some ease because if I could of read this review during the 2 weeks of hell when I didn't know whether I was going to get my data back or not, I would of appreciated it a lot!

    Good Luck!

£1,633 for data recovery of external hard drive with mechanical failure
I would like to share for those interested, my unpleasant experience with these guys.

I had a 1TB Samsung Passport external drive which simply failed out of the blue. The symptoms were a clicking noise when plugged into the USB ports. I could hear the drive initialising the spinning process however after a second or so it would re-start and so on.

I called Kroll and they offered to collect the drive in order to diagnose it. I also sent them a backup drive. In circa 3 days they came back saying there is a mechanical failure (first collection did not come because they forgot to write my street name in the address!). In their email, they attached a quote which said the data is recoverable between 71% and 100% - great news.
    However, their quote shocked me!

There were three levels of prices:
    1. Standard (inc VAT) - £1,633.20
    2. Express (inc VAT) - £3,133.20
    3. Emergency (inc VAT) - £3,940.09

I went back to them asking why it is so high. They replied that due to the complexity of the job, this is the quote. I replied asking them to detail what exactly is so complex about the job. I did tell them that my hard drive had never been dropped, rarely it had it been outside my home and I hardly ever used it (I was storing personal photos and documents on it mostly). So, it appeared to be a mechanical failure of the reading/writing heads.

    They reply was:
    "
We have the report attached to this email, it is as was sent over previously.

Unfortunately there is a failure of a mechanical component in the device. Therefore our engineers will need to overcome this physical failure in our class 100 clean room. The drive can then be passed to our lab engineers who look to rebuild any damaged structures, and conclude the recovery. The time, expertise, and parts that are needed for a recovery of this type are significant unfortunately.
    "

In other words simply sent the quote (again) and avoided a proper explanation as to what the complexity was.

After all this is just another external drive and all specialists use a cleanroom 100 in any case - otherwise how are they supposed to do their jobs?

I was bitterly disappointed and went in person to pick up the faulty and recovery drives. I resent it to a different company and got it done for £275.

This experience taught me that I should not believe what these people (Kroll Ontrack) say and challenge their quotes. The star is for the communication which was indeed professional.

However, the lack of a proper response disgusted me - there was no explanation as to how they quantified the £1633 cost. They should be ashamed - we are not chimps, we are not companies, it was a personal hard drive and their expertise certainly does not justify the cost if others can do it 5-6 times cheaper - if not better.

My advice for others is to research and do not let yourselves tricked into abhorrent quotes!

I hope this helps others to consider their position but most importantly Kroll to perhaps think twice...

PS: Never received a review link from EKOMI - I wonder why?!
